Gouverneto Monastery

Gouverneto monastery is located in Akrotiri peninsula, just 4 km from Agia Triada Tzagaroli monastery and 19 km from Chania city. It was built in the 16th century, and is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. The buildings that surround it with thick walls were used as fortification in previous centuries. The monastery was one of the wealthiest in Crete, owning large parts of land in the area. The church of the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin, and for this reason the monastery is also known as Our Lady of the Angels.
